Apple has issued a stark warning to people who charge their iPhones overnight.

Many of us think the best time to charge our phones is at night, while we’re asleep.

After all, it’s pretty much the only time of day we can guarantee we won’t need to disconnect it prematurely.

But it may be time to reconsider.

Apple has issued a caution to iPhone users who plug their phones in while they’re asleep, and it’s freaking the internet out…

An official statement from the tech giant explains that you should not sleep with your phone under your pillow or anywhere on your body while it’s plugged in.

It warns: “Don’t sleep on a device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body when it’s connected to a power source.

“Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging.

“Take special care if you have a physical condition.”

So, what’s the reason behind the warning?

Not only is it actually a potential health hazard, but it can cause fires and electric shocks. Oh, and it’s absolutely awful for your phone’s battery, too.

Apple issued a further warning that using third-party chargers to fuel your device could elevate the potential for fire hazards.

This is due to certain lower-cost chargers that might lack the equivalent safety protocols that are found in Apple’s authorised offerings.

To address this concern, the tech company suggests using cables with a ‘Made for iPhone’ label on them, meaning it does adhere to globally recognised safety benchmarks.

Apple explains: “You can also charge iPhone with ‘Made for iPhone’ or other third-party cables and power adapters that are compliant with USB 2.0 or later and with applicable country regulations and international and regional safety standards.

“Other adapters may not meet applicable safety standards, and charging with such adapters could pose a risk of death or injury.”

It adds: “It’s not just charging while sleeping that you should avoid.”

The trillion-dollar company insists that you should never charge your device near water or any other liquid, and should attempt to discard chargers as soon as they become damaged.

Apple says: “Using damaged cables or chargers, or charging when moisture is present, can cause fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to iPhone or other property.”

It should be noted that this applies to all phones and devices – not just Apple products.

A firefighter has taken to TikTok to stress the dangers of not charging your phone overnight.

He firstly suggests that while you are asleep, you can’t smell burning so you will be oblivious to the smoke coming from the charger.

“Number two: it only takes three breaths, right, to knock you unconscious,” he continues.

“Number three: lots of people have cheap or faulty phone chargers or even genuine ones have been known to start fires.

“If you’re able to, we advise you to charge your phone when you’re there and awake from a fire service point of view. It’s much safer.”

@kentfirerescue This is a highly debated topic on our TikTok, but if you ARE able to do so, it’s much safer to charge any electrical items when you’re there and awake ✔️ #firesafety #firefighting #kentfire #firefighters #kentuk #fireservice #firesafetytips #firefightertiktok #firefightersoftiktok ♬ Keeping Your Head Up (Jonas Blue Remix) [Radio Edit] – Birdy
