Netflix’s Chris Watts documentary didn’t detail five shocking details about the case.

The popular streaming service has a reputation for providing some of the most gripping documentaries ever made.

Content such as Waco: American Apocalypse, Conversations With A Killer and The Imposter all drew viewers in due to their shocking nature.

Now, a documentary that focuses on a horrific murder has also gripped viewers.

But it appears the show didn’t tell the whole story.

Watch the trailer for the gripping documentary below…

American Murder: The Family Next Door tells the story of the murders of Shanann Watts – who was 15 weeks pregnant – and her two daughters Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3.

Her husband and the children’s father, Chris Watts, claimed to be unaware of their whereabouts when they initially disappeared.

However, his story soon fell apart and he was found guilty of all three murders.

Watts received life in prison – along with an additional 48 years for the unlawful termination of Shanann’s pregnancy and 36 years for ‘tampering’ with the bodies.

Watts apparently strangled his wife in their bed before driving her body and their two daughters to a worksite – where he smothered the girls with a blanket.

The documentary uses a combination of archived documents – such as social media posts, law enforcement recordings, text messages and home video footage – to retell the horrific story.

However, Netflix missed out on some key details about how the events in American Murder played out.

Firstly, there was reportedly tension between Shanann and Chris’ parents.

He made claims that Shanann had never got on with his parents – who didn’t attend their wedding – and she reportedly wasn’t speaking to them at the time of her murder.

She allegedly believed that Watts’ mother, Cindy, was reckless and didn’t take Celeste’s nut allergy seriously.

There was an incident where she gave her granddaughter ice cream that contained peanuts, according to the Daily Mail.

In a text message released by Weld County District Attorney (via CBS News), Shanann said to her husband: “You should call your dad and tell him you did not appreciate your mom putting your daughter at risk today.

“She’s evil and willing to risk your daughter’s life just to get under my skin. You and your dad are no different if you are ok with her behaviour.

“There’s nothing wrong with me and I’m not crazy. I just love my kids way too much.”

Watts’ mother later told ABC11 that she had a ‘hard relationship’ with Shanann – adding that she ‘couldn’t do anything right’.

It was also made known in the documentary that Watts was having an affair with Nicole Kessinger.

However, it didn’t show how serious the romance was.

According to People, Kessinger had spent over two hours searching for wedding dresses on Google – along with the search topic ‘marrying your mistress’.

Kessinger also claimed that Watts had lied about his marriage to Shanann, as he told her they were ‘finalising’ their divorce.

While his affair with Kessinger was shown in the documentary, it has been reported that she wasn’t his only fling.

According to Inside Edition, Watts was on Tinder before the murders and this led to a one-night-stand with Amanda McMahon prior to his affair with Kessinger.

She also told the outlet that Watts said that he was divorced.

A male escort called Trent Bolte has also claimed to have had a 10-month relationship with Watts in 2018.

Bolte’s mom, Colleen added that her son was ‘seeing’ Watts.

However, Watts denied the allegation and told investigators: “I’ve never been with a guy.”

Another piece of information that was left out of the documentary was Watts’ secret prison visitor.

According to an ‘Inmate Visitation History’ document from 6 January 2020, obtained by OK!, Anna Nowak is one of Watts’ approved visitors at Dodge Correctional Institution in Wisconsin.

She visited him almost weekly and was even turned away in April 2019 for reportedly exceeding the maximum number of visits per day.

Finally, it was reported that Shanann was trying to save her marriage.

The couple had apparently planned a weekend away in Aspen to help heal their fractured relationship and she had looked for couples counsellors in the area that they could speak to.

In text messages obtained by People, Shannan told Watts to stop ‘living the bachelor life’ and said they ‘need to talk’.

She had reportedly searched for Groupon deals for travelling and managed to find a babysitter to watch their daughters while they went away.
