According to a report published in the journal Cognitive Processing, your reaction to a number of jokes may, in fact, tell others a lot about your level of intelligence.
In the paper, a number of psychologists came to the conclusion that those who appreciate dark humour.
Defined in the text as those who appreciate ‘humour that treats sinister subjects like death, disease, deformity, handicap or warfare with bitter amusement and presents such tragic, distressing or morbid topics in humorous terms’.

These people may have higher IQs and show lower aggression and resist negative feelings more effectively than people who turn up their noses at them.
According to the researchers, processing a darker style of joke takes slightly more mental gymnastics than a regular knock-knock joke.
It’s described as ‘a complex information-processing task’ that requires sifting multiple layers of meaning while creating a bit of emotional distance from the content so that it registers as warm-hearted instead of aggressive.
Almost every joke that relies on wordplay will put your brain to work, however, darker jokes just require slightly more emotional control to earn a laugh.
