Belgian authorities have reportedly ordered the chocolate factory – which is apparently owned by Ferrero – to put a halt to production as it’s suspected to be responsible for the rise in the disease’s cases across several European countries and the US.

It’s believed that Belgium’s food safety authority AFSCA has said that ‘following the findings of the last few hours that information provided by Ferrero is incomplete’.

Belgian Agriculture Minister, David Clarinva, reportedly said in a statement: “Such a decision is never taken lightly, but the current circumstances make it necessary.

“The food security of our citizens can never be neglected.”

Reportedly, Ferrero has responded by ‘acknowledging its internal failures’ and added that it ‘profoundly regrets’ and ‘sincerely apologises’ for the current situation.

According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), sixty-three cases of salmonella have been reported in the UK.

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has reportedly listed at least 134 cases. It’s believed to mainly have affected children under the age of 10.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause people to experience stomach cramps, nausea, fever, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Typically, most cases occur when ingested food has been contaminated with animal or human faeces.

Despite the move to close the Kinder chocolate factory, none of the brand’s items have apparently been found that contain the disease.
