The priest who visits Michael Schumacher has provided an update on the Formula 1 icon’s health.

The driver has been kept out of the public eye following a life-changing ski accident in 2013, where he suffered a head injury.

Archbishop Georg Gänswein made the comments to the German newspaper Bild, via Hello magazine.

He said: “I sat opposite him, took hold of both hands and looked at him. He senses that loving people are around him, caring for him and, thank God, keeping the overly curious public away.

“Of course, I include Michael Schumacher and his family in my prayers.”

Details about Schumacher’s health have been kept private, with only little bits of information being released to the public.

According to The Sun, the seven-time World Champion was in a coma for six months after the accident.

However, he is currently wheelchair-bound and is able to react to what is around him.

In the same article, it was revealed that he could possibly be going through a ‘breakthrough’ stem cell treatment that would help him rebuild his nervous system.

No details have been released regarding this treatment, but his former Ferrari boss, Jean Todt has recently provided another update.

He told German broadcaster NTV, via MirrorOnline: “I don’t miss Michael. I can see him. But of course, what I miss is what we used to do together.”

Todt also added that the pair watch Formula 1 together since Schumacher’s son, Mick, is currently a racer who drives for Haas.

In 2021, Netflix released a documentary about the sportsman and his acclaimed career and touched on his tragic accident.

Speaking in the film, called Schumacher, his wife Corrina said: “I just felt that he is somebody special… I think that he is simply very strong mentally. Extremely strong. He still shows me how strong he is every day.”
