Peter Kay has revealed that his role in Doctor Who is his only real career ‘regret’ because of how poorly received the episode is regarded among fans.

The Phoenix Nights star played the villain Victor Kennedy/Abzorbaloff in the 2006 episode ‘Love & Monsters,’ whose mission was to steal The Doctor’s, played by David Tennent, appearance, power, and knowledge.

Upon being cast, he revealed to Doctor Who Confidential: “It’s like a childish dream come true to be in ‘Doctor Who’ and to be an alien.”

However, in a 2011 interview with the Daily Express, Kay described the role as his ‘one real regret in his career’.

He went on to explain: “I loved making it but when I saw it, I thought, ‘Oh my God. I’m a big green lizard running around Cardiff? Is that it?’.

“It’s nice to have been in Doctor Who but that is regarded by fans as the worst episode ever.

“In 10 years’ time, I’ll be able to do the Doctor Who conventions and charge people a tenner for a photo!”

The comedian was initially offered the part of Elton, a UFO expert who would aid the Doctor, by screenwriter Russell T Davies but turned the role down because Kay felt it was too similar to his appearance in Coronation Street.

He was then given the role of the main villain of the episode.

The grotesque appearance of the character was designed by a nine-year-old who won a competition on Blue Peter.

Along with his hit TV shows like Max and Paddy: The Road To Nowhere and Carshare, Kay has made a number of cameos in famous British productions such as Wallace & Gromit, Mrs Browns Boys, and The League of Gentlemen.
