Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were apparently already ‘related’ before they got married, according to research put together by fans of the couple.

Following news of their engagement in 2017, some people decided to dig into their family history, where they discovered that the pair are distant cousins.

A genealogical investigation conducted by The Mail on Sunday revealed they are related by a 15th-century ancestor who shares a connection with the Queen.

The Duchess of Sussex is a part of this through her father Thomas Markle and his mother’s side of the family.

In the article, The Mail writes: “Indeed, they can be traced all the way back to an Englishman called Ralph Bowes, Meghan’s ancestor from 15 generations ago.

“He was a High Sheriff of County Durham, whose family seat was Streatlam Castle with its extensive estates.”

Two of his grandchildren can be traced to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, with Sir George Bowes being a distant relative of Prince Harry and Bridget Bowes can be traced to Markle’s family tree.

They add: “A couple of centuries later the direct line to the Royal Family and Harry starts, when the estate and the castle have passed down to Sir George Bowes, an MP.

“His second wife gave birth to one child, a daughter – Mary Bowes – who in 1767 married John Lyon, 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

“John Lyon added Bowes to his name and the Bowes-Lyon dynasty was forged.

“Five generations later, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married the Duke of York, who would become George VI.

“In due course, Elizabeth would be Queen Mother when her eldest daughter became Queen Elizabeth II in 1952.”

Meanwhile, for Markle, The Mail explains: “His granddaughter Bridget Bowes became a dutiful wife to John Hussey, of Dorking, Surrey.

“His grandson, Christopher Hussey moved to America in 1632, helping to found Nantucket, Massachusetts, and this is the line of the family that would eventually produce Meghan.”

They are not the first royal couple to be distantly related, as someone apparently discovered that Prince William and Kate Middleton are 12th cousins, once removed.
