Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, has blamed Martin Bashir for the death of his sister.

Diana infamously sat down for an interview with the BBC journalist two years prior to her death.

However, speaking during a Panorama special, Earl Spencer has said he believes ‘deceitful’ Bashir tricked her into agreeing to it by making ‘everyone untrustworthy’.

He said: “The irony is I met Martin Bashir on the 31st August 1995 because exactly two years later she died and I do draw a line between the two events.

“It’s quite clear from the introduction I sat in on on the 19th September 1995 everybody was going to be made untrustworthy and I think Diana did lose trust in really key people.

“This is a young girl in her mid 30s who has lived this extraordinarily difficult and turbulent time in the public eye – she didn’t know who to trust – and in the end when she died two years later, she was without any form of real protection.”

He added: “Bashir was very good at amplifying people’s anxieties.

“He was very good at making you feel as though he was your friend who was going to save you in a in a difficult and dangerous world.”

The interview, which was watched by more than 20 million people, was filled with explosive bombshells which sent shockwaves through the Royal Family.

Diana admitted to having an affair and spoke out about Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

She also opened up about her struggles with bulimia.

Shortly after it aired, the Queen reportedly wrote to her and Prince Charles and told them to divorce.

Two years later, she was killed in a car crash in Paris.

Her death caused an outpouring of public grief and her funeral was watched by an estimated 2.5billion people.

Her son, Prince Harry, will open up about how he walked behind her coffin, aged 12, on his upcoming mental health series with Oprah Winfrey.
