The Teacher viewers are saying they’ve been left with their ‘skin crawling’ as they try to solve the show’s plot.

The Channel 5 drama follows a senior school teacher (played by Sheridan Smith) who goes on a boozy night out and is then accused of having an illicit relationship with 15-year-old student, Kyle (Samuel Bottomley).

After watching the first episode, which aired on January 31, many people have taken to Twitter and said some scenes were ‘horrid’.

One Twitter user commented: “Anybody watching #TheTeacher on Channel 5 and can feel their skin crawling? Horrid.”

Another added: “Jenna [Smith’s character] has the right to go out gallivanting every night if she so chooses, but when it interferes with her school life, and it leads to [an] accusation of sexual assault, it’s a whole different ball game #TheTeacher.”

However, many were distracted by Smith’s ‘compelling’ performance and took to the comments to praise her.

A viewer said: “Channel 5’s The Teacher… What a compelling watch, Sheridan Smith [is a] brilliant actress.”

In agreement, a second wrote: “Is there any part Sheridan Smith can’t play? Great actress.”

The Teacher on Channel 5 is gonna be some series,” a third enthused. “Anything Sheridan Smith touches turns to gold. She’s an amazing British actress.”

Alongside a ton of clapping emojis, a fourth penned: “Sheridan Smith doing her thing…”

Smith recently revealed in an interview about The Teacher that she felt compelled to take on the role as she enjoys playing ‘flawed and complex’ characters.

The actress reportedly said: “Jenna is such a complex character, there are so many layers to her and I love the fact that you don’t know if she’s telling the truth or not.

“All these twists and turns came along in the story that I did not expect, and I couldn’t put it down, which is rare – I read it all in one go.”

She continued: “Sometimes characters written for women can be quite bland, but I love playing people who are flawed and complex like Jenna.

“She’s got a drink problem, she’s lost her mum, has a really strained relationship with her dad and she has just gone off the rails and lost herself a bit.

“When she finishes work, she clocks out and has a chaotic life. I always want to make a character likeable because I want to find the heart in them, no matter how flawed someone is, but I do want the audience to doubt Jenna and to feel unsure about where they stand, it’s exciting to play that in a role.”
